Ride Report: CSBA Dive into Delaware Ride October 5, 2019

- Some of the riders at the morning meet up spot at the Starlite Diner -

We give thanks to God for His wisdom and His Blessings….

The October CSBA ride always faces the possibility of being a “wet leaves ride”. Fortunately, again, this year – because most of the leaves are still on their trees – we did not have much risk in that department as we prepared to ride toward Delaware for our rescheduled route from July.

Though the attendees had to endure a ride in to the diner around 40 degrees, we were quite fortunate with the weather for the day, as it eventually warmed up through the 50’s. During the pre-ride meeting, we discussed some of the special “features” of this route, which was supposed to include a detour around a recently chipped State highway. Because much of this route includes heavily traveled roads and revenue-generation opportunities for local law enforcement, we emphasized that this event would be more about the scenery and camaraderie than spirited riding.

We also suggested that riders unfamiliar with these roads join the “Chase” group, following Rusty. This advice went largely ignored and most of the 18 riders followed Rick in the Lead group, leaving 5 following Rusty.

One feature unique to this route, as the only one that runs primarily south, is that much of the day is spent riding directly into the Sun – and especially so in October. It was a beautiful day for a ride, but the bright sunlight made for some stark shadows in the tree-lined areas of the route.

- The morning ride meet up at the Starlite Diner -

Although Russ did a good job of outlining the rules of the road while discussing pace and cautioning the group on traffic flow and potential hazards, I think most of the crowd was itching to move. So when he established the 2 groups and he indicated we would be relatively sedate compared to the prior months ride, the lead group seemed to swell as we exited the Starlite. Alan and I had good communications via our Sena units at the start and rolled through the first several miles fairly smooth but when the group began to run at pace we spread out to more than 3/4 mile and we would lose contact. Lesson learned is we really need to try keeping groups to less than 10 if at all possible. The lead group dutifully followed me as I blew past a couple turns when my Scenic Moto maps app was lagging my actual ride position and I over shot the route’s required turn. In one case we enjoyed a 2 or 3 mile twisty detour having some fun in the process. There were tight lines and some nice pacing for everyone. We had an ‘incident’ with a road hazard that rendered our sweep’s bike out of commission. He didn’t go down but the bike got tweaked and he needed to roll carefully home after lunch.

The Chase group’s ride went smoothly – aside from a fuel delivery problem in a certain silver and blue Hayabusa that requires frequent stops for fuel – and, thanks to a route departure by the Lead group, we arrived at the lunch stop first.

- The group listening to Rick provide his message -

After a great time of story-sharing and fellowship, Rick shared his message…

I used the following article by Rick Warren, bestselling author (A Purpose Driven Life) and Pastor as the basis for the message, essentially trying to point out that happiness and joy we experience in riding is a choice we make and irrespective of adversities in our life; true joy and happiness are decisions we make through a relationship with GOD. It’s in that context that we are so very blessed and able to share in the joy and the difficulties of the day. I’ve been told a shared blessing is twice the joy and a shared burden is half the sorrow. Therefore share life with each other and don’t let anyone take your happiness!

You're as Happy as You Choose to Be
By Rick Warren

“It does not matter! I am happy about it—just so Christ is preached in every way possible, whether from wrong or right motives. And I will continue to be happy” (Philippians 1:18 GNT). Few things rob your happiness faster than being criticized or feeling like others are working against you. Why? Because we all want to be loved. We all want approval. We all want people to like us.

Yet Paul says in Philippians 1:18, “It does not matter! I am happy about it—just so Christ is preached in every way possible, whether from wrong or right motives. And I will continue to be happy” (GNT). You don’t need other people’s approval to be happy. You’re as happy as you choose to be! If others are unhappy with you, that’s their choice. If you haven’t earned someone’s approval by now, you’re probably not going to get it. And you’re going to be miserable if you try to live for the approval of everybody else.

Paul later explains in verses 29 and 30 why you can be happy no matter what: “You have been given not only the privilege of trusting in Christ but also the privilege of suffering for him. We are in this struggle together. You have seen my struggle in the past, and you know that I am still in the midst of it” (NLT). Paul says it is a privilege to suffer when you’re doing the right thing because you’re most like Jesus when you face opposition and rejection.

You can be happy no matter what happens if you look at every problem from God’s viewpoint and never let what other people say or do control your happiness.

- The group eating lunch at Sovana Bistro -

For the afternoon, we regrouped, with some riders heading directly home and some others planning to split off along the way, and embarked further south before heading west.

After lunch we had a smaller team and found we could scoot a little more at a better pace, limited by traffic at times but taking advantage of appropriate safe passing opportunities. We got spread out over some of the river winding roads but were able to re-join at the key transition points. Towards the end of the day, I picked up a nail, so pointing our team down the road to the meet up end point I high tailed home before the tire would be totally flat. Home with 20lbs left in the tire, but home and not walking! It was a very ‘pleasant’ day of riding; we enjoyed short and intermediate runs of fun while enjoying the SE Pennsylvania country side.

Once again, the Chase group traveled through the scenery without incident, until we happened upon some of the Lead group stopped on Rt. 282 for a low-speed low side by one of the riders. Thankfully, there were no injuries and the bike damage was minimal. Shortly after that, the groups all merged and reorganized as the Lead group backtracked to pick up the riders who stopped.

Near the end of the route, the Chase group yet again came upon the Lead group as they stopped for a nail in Rick’s tire. At that point, the Hayabusa was desperately in need of fuel, so since the ride was nearly complete, we stopped for fuel and decided to say our “Goodbyes” and scattered home.

On behalf of the CSBA, we would like to take this moment to thank everyone for your continued participation, involvement and giving attitudes on our rides and events. Whether you come out to ride or just break bread with us – we welcome your participation. These rides are designed for you, our riders, to enjoy the roads and have fellowship with us. We’re promoting a fellowship and an environment in which we want you to come and enjoy your love with others that share your passion for riding.
